Yes — Pixel Editor is 100% free, with no paywall, no watermark, and no credit card required. The full editor, gallery, animation timeline, and GIF export are available to everyone. It is a personal open-source project maintained by Frédéric Terrasson, not a SaaS with hidden tiers.
Yes — a free account is required to start creating in the editor. Signup takes about 30 seconds with just an email — no payment, no credit card, no subscription. Your account stores your projects, syncs them between devices, and lets you publish to the community gallery.
Pixel Editor uses a fixed 32×32 pixel grid — the classic sprite resolution popularised by 8-bit and 16-bit era games. This 1,024-pixel canvas is large enough for detailed characters and icons, but small enough to stay true to the pixel-art aesthetic and animate smoothly frame-by-frame.
Yes — Pixel Editor supports frame-by-frame animation with a built-in timeline running at 24 FPS by default. You can add, duplicate, reorder, or delete frames, preview the loop, and export the full animation as an animated GIF ready to share on social media or messaging apps.
Yes — Pixel Editor runs in any modern web browser, including Safari on iPhone and iPad, Chrome on Android, and all desktop browsers. Touch gestures, responsive layout, and a mobile-optimised toolbar deliver the same drawing experience on a 6-inch phone or a 27-inch monitor.
Each project supports up to 8 custom colors in its palette, in addition to the default palette. This constraint is intentional — it mirrors the limited palettes of classic pixel-art consoles and forces creative color choices, which is a core skill of the pixel-art craft.
Projects save automatically to your browser localStorage (up to 10 recent projects, no size limit). Sign in with a free account to back them up to Supabase cloud storage and sync between devices. You can also export any project as a .json file to keep a permanent offline copy.
Yes — every saved project can be published to the community gallery with a single click, or shared directly via a unique /shared/<token> link. Recipients can view it, play the animation, and duplicate your project as a starting point for their own creation, with attribution preserved.
